Sharon Joan Merklinger, age 64, of Lakeview and formerly of Petoskey and Ionia, 
passed away on Monday Aug. 11, 2008 at Gratiot Community Hospital in Alma, Mich.

She was born Oct. 5, 1943 to Eldon and Lilah Keehn Knapp in Jackson, Mich. She 
was raised in Ionia and attended local Ionia Public Schools graduating Class of 
1962. On Feb. 1, 1979 Sharon married Carl Merklinger in Arcadia, Fla. Sharon 
had many special interests involving helping others. She was a member of the 
Military Order of Purple Hearts Food Pantry and the Vietnam Veterans. She also 
helped with VA car shows. Sharon also worked for Kilwin’s Fudge Factory in 
Petosky, Millers Ice Cream in Ionia and the Coach House Motel. She was a loving 
and wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Sharon is survived by her husband, Carl Merklinger of Lakeview; four daughters, 
Connie S. Jackson of Lakeview, Billie Jo (Charles Jr.) Marrs of Alba, Jill 
Marie (Michael) Bernadyn of East Jordan and Vonnie M. (Dave) Davis of St. 
Petersburg, Fla.; six grandchildren, Susan Marie Johnson, Elizabeth N. Cox and 
Promise S. Cox, both of Daytona Beach, Fla., Rollie Clifford Royse of East 
Jordan and Fantasia L. Davis and Dave Jr. Davis, both of St. Petersburg, Fla.; 
two great-grandsons, Trenton (Royse) McBee and J’kuan “Scooter”; one great-
granddaughter, name unknown; two brothers, Ronald (Jan) Knapp of Petosky and 
Robert Knapp of Ionia; five nieces and nephews, Travis, Shawn, Sara, Tammy and 
Tara and many great-nieces and-nephews.

Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, Eldon and Lilah Knapp; one 
grandson Daniel D. Davis of St. Petersburg, Fla., and grandparents, Henry and 
Marjorie Knapp.

Funeral services for Sharon will be Monday, Aug. 18, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the 
Brigham Funeral Chapel in Lakeview, Mich. Visitation will be Sunday, Aug. 17, 
2008 from 2-7 and 6-8 p.m.at the funeral home. Memorial Contributions may be 
made to the family. Burial will be at Altona Cemetery. A luncheon will be held 
at Hinton Township Hall.
