Mr. Merriam was nearly 90 years of age at the time of his death. The funeral will be held from the residence Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock and burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery. Rev. R. B. Chapman will conduct the services. Mr. Merriam was born in Trumbull county, Ohio, March 1, 1825. For a number of years he was a farmer but because of his health he was compelled to go into other work and as a result he went into the carriage making business. When he came to Ionia in 1874 he went to live in the house where he died and lived there ever since. When he came to Ionia he entered the dry good business, the firm being known as Flint & Merriam and being in business where the Elks temple now stands. Afterwards he was in the store of Kneeland & Merriam for a number of years. In recent years he has lived quietly at his home. Mr. Merriam lost his first wife in 1877. He married again in 1880 and is survived by the widow. One son, Almon W. Merriam also survives. Mr. Merriam was a faithful member of the Church of Christ in which he held the positions of deacon and elder for many years.
