Ionia Standard, 29 Jul 1880

It becomes our painful duty to announce the death of Walter Merriam, who died 
on Tuesday, the 27th inst., after a lingering illness of three months or more.  
During this period at times strong hopes were entertained of his recovery, his 
life apparently wavering in the balance, but the disease proved too formidable 
and baffled the best efforts of his medical attendants.  His departure seems 
sad from the fact the he had just entered upon life’s realities with all the 
bright hopes and expectations of youth.  He had been a resident of Ionia for 
the past 8 years and had formed many warm friends by his genial nature and 
winning manners, who deeply sympathize with the widow in this her latest 
affliction, they having lost their only child but a few weeks ago.
