Mrs. Kate Kneeland Merriam departed this life, at the family home on East Washington street, on Friday morning, Oct. 12, at age of 50 years. She had been in feeble health much of the current year, and in a precarious condition for some six weeks. She was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. D. B. Kneeland, who came from York State in 1844, to North Plains township, Ionia county, where deceased was born. The family moved thence to Galvin, Ill, and back to the then village of Ionia in 1869, and have lived here continuously ever since. Deceased was one of the class of three who graduated from the Ionia High school in 18?4, and afterward taught for two years in one of the North Plains districts, for which avocation she displayed much aptitude. Kate Merriam was best known in this city and county as for many years a popular and faithful saleslady in the dry goods house of Cooper & Putney, and in this position numbered a large clientele. She was a friend of that class to whom one can easily become confidently attached. The funeral was on Sunday afternoon from the home which she so long graced. The discourse was by the Rev. Cyrus Mendenhall, and the singing was by Mrs. Ed. R. Bailey and Miss Alice Woodward. There was a profusion of beautiful flowers on the casket. The bearers who attended her to the last earthly resting place in Highland Park, were Wallace Charles, and uncle, Albion Charles and F. F. Stevens, cousins, Jno. F. Bible, Edward R. Bailey, and the husband, who walked by her side in death as attentive as he did in her life time.
