After four days of hopelessness and suffering as the culmination of six years of illness, Edward Merriett died Sunday morning at 9:00 o’clock, at the residence 325 ˝ West Main St. Mr. Merriett was seventy years old last December, but was actively engaged in business here up to last Wednesday, when he was forced to give up the office work and remain at home. His illness grew out of an optical operation performed six years ago, his health having been failing ever since that time. During the last several months the alteration in his strength has been noticeable. The funeral will be held at the residence at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, the services being conducted by Rev. C.E. Hoag, assisted by other pastors of the city. Mr. Merriett is survived by his wife and three children, one daughter, Marian, being deceased. Mrs. S.L. Chapman of Toledo, Ohio, Mrs. Fred L. Fischer of this city and Miles Merriett of Long Lake are now living. There are also two sisters and two brothers living: Mrs. Eva J. Cosman of Salida, Col., Mrs. Captain Ormsby of Portland, Ore., A.S. Merriett of Kansas City and E.T. Merriett of this city. Mr. Merriett was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. Merriett, and was born in Vermont. He was about sixteen years old when the family came to Michigan. The home for a time in Ypsilanti, where he took college work, afterward attending a commercial school in Detroit. He was in the army during the Civil war but saw only a short period of service, being wounded in the Battle of the Wilderness about six months after enlisting. He was in Harper hospital in Detroit for two and one-half years as a consequence of the wound. November 25, 1875, he married Almyra VanDoren of Palo, the ceremony being performed there. It was thirty-one years ago that they moved to this city, where their children were brought up and where Mr. Merriett was associated for twenty years with the Webber Hardware Company. For more than ten years before his death he was in the insurance business, Mrs. Merriett being associated with him in the E.W. Merriett & Co. offices. Mrs. Chapman and son arrived from Toledo last week, and Mr. Chapman is expected tonight. Mr. Merriett’s brother, A.S. Merriett, is expected from Kansas City. Mrs. Merriett expects relatives of her own also, including Mr. and Mrs. Frank VanDoren of Flint, Mr. and Mrs. A.H. -Doren of Flint, Mr. and Mrs. A.H.
