Colby was born in Sutton, Vermont, Oct. 23, 1820; was married to T. J. Merriett in 1840; moved to Michigan in 1854, where they lived until his death in 1893. She then went to Salida, Colorado, to live with her daughters, Mrs. Eva J. Cosman and Mrs. Nettie V. Lawrence, where she died Jan. 7th, 1895 of pneumonia. She was the mother of seven children, three sons and four daughters, all now residing in the west, except E. W. and E. T. Merriett, of Ionia. She was been a devoted member of the Methodist Episcopal church for over fifty years. She belonged to the Ionia W. C. T. U., and loved the temperance cause second only to the cause of her Christ. Her remains were brought here by her daughter, Mrs. Cosman and son, Alva S. Merriett, arriving last evening. Funeral was today; sermon by Rev. J. I. Buel, 116th Psalm: “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.” Most truthfully can it be said of her, “She hath done what she could”.
