The Ionia Daily Sentinel, Monday, February 12, 1962
Eugene Philo Merrill, 83, died Monday at the Masonic hospital in Alma.  He had 
lived the past five years at the Masonic home and had previously resided on 
High street in Ionia.  Born in Portland, Maine, December 19, 1878, he was the 
son of Eugene and Lillian Gilkey Merrill.  He was married in Detroit in 1917 
to Roberta H. Carr who preceded him in death.  

Mr. Merrill was a member of First Presbyterian church of Alma.  He was 
employed in the sales and advertising department of Chrysler in Detroit until 
his retirement in 1951.  He was a life member of F & AM Zion lodge I of 
Detroit.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. William C. Adrian of Seaford, New York, 
and Mrs. Marco Peterson of Ionia; seven grandchildren; and two brothers, 
Andrew C. Merritt of Eastham, Massachusetts and Ralph L. Merrill of 
Brookhaven, New York.  

Funeral services will be at Dewey funeral home in Alma Wednesday at 10 a.m. 
with interment at Roseland cemetery at Royal Oak.  The Rev. J. Louis Crandall 
of First Presbyterian church of Alma will officiate.
