Rests in Lake Side Cemetery. Cecil Gilliland, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gilliland is widowed by the death of her veteran husband, James Merrill. Mr. Merrill won honors in long service but enjoyed citizens life only a few years afterward. Passing as the result of injuries in service. American Legion here were very helpful during the stay of Mrs. Merrill in Lake Odessa and were instrumental in getting him in an American Legion hospital, but his stay was short, as his disease was apparently beyond help. Thus the World War numbers another victim of untimely death. Obituary James Ad??n Merrill was born October 18, 1899 at Grawn, Michigan. Hs father, Marion W. and mother, Agnes J. Merrill preceded him in death. When the call to arms came it found him ready to serve his county. On January 9th, 1918 he enlisted at Lansing, Michigan, reaching France April 30, 1918. He returned to America February 16, 1919. In the same year he was discharged but the service of his country called him to reenlist. On August 26, 1920 he again put on the uniform and sailed away, this time to the Hawaiian Islands and again was mustered out March 10, 1922. February 21, 1925 he was united in marriage to Miss Cecil E. Gilliland of Lake Odessa. For this short period of happiness they made their home in Lansing where Mr. Merrill was employed by Durant Motors as an auto trimmer. His last illness began October 12, but he was not confined to his home until December 24. On December 29th they came to the home of Mrs. Merrill’s parents at Lake Odessa. As Mr. Merrill continued to lose in health he was removed to the American Legion hospital at Waukesha, Wisconsin, where he passed away, February 6, 1929. The cause of his death was due to complications of injuries received in service. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Cecil E. Merrill, who will for the present remain with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gilliland. Two sisters, Mrs. Wm. Hostetler, Lansing and Mrs. John Pulcipher, Acme, Michigan, also survive. Interment was made at Lake Side cemetery, services were conducted from the 1st U.B. church; Rev. C.N. Storins?, officiating. American Legion acted as pall bearers.
