The Ionia County News, Thursday, February 19, 1948


Mrs. Emma Merritt, 76, died at 4:30 Thursday morning, Feb. 19, at the home of 
her daughter, Mrs. Charles Houghton, Ionia township.  She had been failing in 
health for several years, but was seriously ill only about three weeks before 
her death.

Emma Ritenburg was born in Ionia township July 22, 1874, and married to A. E. 
Merritt, also of Ionia township, on December 28, 1882.  She had been a 
lifelong resident of Ionia county.  For (…illegible…) years Mr. and Mrs. 
Merritt lived on a farm two miles north of Ionia.  After Mr. Merritt’s death 
in 1940 she went to live with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. 
Houghton.

Other survivors are a granddaughter, Mrs. Margaret Miller; a grandson, Russell 
Houghton; a great-grandson, Gayle Houghton; a sister and a brother, Mrs. Ella 
McCarry and George Ritenburg, all of Ionia.  

Funeral service will be at three o’clock Saturday afternoon at the Methodist 
church, Ionia, with Rev. F. G. Dunbar of Grand Rapids as officiating minister.
