The Carson City Gazette, Friday, July 17, 1914
Ira Messer, aged 19 years was drowned in the Maple river near Matherton 
Tuesday.  He in the company with two companions, was in bathing and was 
learning to swim by the use of water wings, when the one side collapsed, and 
he drowned before aid could reach him.  His body was recovered in about an 
hour.  The family has the sympathy of all in their sad bereavement.
