She was preceded in death by her mother Mary Pietroytis; step-mother Emma Sproull; father Leo M. Pietroytis; half-sister Stelly Ketts; sister Irene Windle; brother Leo Pietroytis; half-brother Ed Pietroytis; and husband George S. (Jim) Meyer. She is survived by sons Hans (Deb) Meyer, and Kurt (Stephanie Racz) Meyer; daughters Sue (Tom) Buck, and Lisa (Craig) Hessler; grandchildren Travis (Tori) Meyer, Krista (Eric) King, and Emily, Jake and Ryan Hessler; great- grandchildren Wyatt and Hadley Meyer. Elza put herself through college at Jackson Junior College and Michigan State University, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Home Economics. She married Jim Meyer on June 9, 1956 and remained his wife until his passing in 1996. They had four children, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Elza was an active and vibrant member of the Belding community, with special interests in education and in helping friends and children. She earned her second bachelor’s degree, in education, sometime after the age of 50. She was a substitute teacher for many years, then a full-time grade school teacher. Some of her other activities and accomplishments included: Room Mother, Brownie Leader, Cub Scout Leader, 4-H Leader, bazaar organizer, Halloween costume maker, cheerleader outfit maker, Mums for Moms organizer, Neighborhood Club member and hostess, Library Board member, Washington Club member, photographer, birthday grilled cheese sandwich maker, music lover, wall paper hanger, piano learner, reading tutor, maple syrup maker, avid reader, camper extraordinaire, frequent university ride giver, peace keeper, handmade card sender, gift giver, confidence keeper. Elza was a daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She put her best foot forward to share in her husband’s and children’s interests, and she was always there for you when you really needed her most. She will be greatly missed. In keeping with family wishes cremation has taken place. A time to celebrate her life will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the Belding Library, Belding Museum, the B Foundation or Hospice of Michigan.
