He moved with his father’s family to Crawford county, Pa., about the year 1836, where he married Betsy Peck, who now survives him. In the year 1851 he moved to Michigan with his family and settled in this county, living here until 1859, when he moved to Illinois and soon after to the state of Arkansas, where he commenced the treatment of cancer, which gave him a notoriety over all of the western states. About the year 1873 his health began to fail and he came back to Michigan. With the assistance of his son, Dr. J. V. Mickel, he continued the practice of his specialty until the last few years, when he was compelled, on account of his failing health, to surrender nearly all of his practice to his son. Five children survive him—one son and four daughters, Dr. J. V. Mickel, of this city, Mrs. Brown, living in this county, another daughter living in Montcalm county, and two others in Iowa.
