The Ionia Daily Sentinel-Standard, Tuesday, July 20, 1909 Funeral for Mrs. Mickel, brought to Ionia this morning and taken to the home on Jackson street where Dr. Spender conducted the funeral service. The burial was in Highland Park cemetery. The sudden death Friday night of Mrs. Rachel M. Mickel at her home, 189 Ninth avenue, caused the coroners to make an investigation in order to allay suspicions which had been aroused in connection with the case. Mrs. Mickel was sixty-two years old and was employed at the Howard Thomas & Sons cannery. It was the opinion of Dr. V. L. Bell, who attended the woman, that death was due to acute indigestion, although upon the arrival of a daughter of the dead woman, Mrs. Elmer Brown, of Ionia, further investigation was made. Coroners LeRoy and Hilliker conducted a thorough investigation of the case and they came to the conclusion that the condition of the organs substantiated the first diagnosis that acute indigestion was the cause of death. The coroners do not believe that the circumstances in the case would warrant sending the stomach of the woman to Ann Arbor for the purpose of obtaining a chemical analysis. Funeral services will be held this evening at 8 o’clock at French’s chapel, 63 Jefferson avenue. The services will be conducted under the auspices of Watson Relief corps. The body will be taken to Ionia for burial.
