Jack was born Aug. 1, 1926, near Hubbardston, the son of Harley and June Hillabrandt Middlebrook. He graduated from Belding High School with the Class of 1945. After graduation, he proudly served his country in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theater. Following his discharge from the Navy, Jack graduated from Central Michigan University with a teaching certificate and later received his master’s degree from the University of Michigan. He began his teaching career with the Belding Area Schools in 1952, first as a teacher and later as principle of Ellis, Orleans and Hallpark schools. Jack was blessed with that special ability to bring out the best in his students, parents and fellow teachers. After retiring from Belding, Jack began almost a second career serving as a courier for United Memorial Hospital in Greenville for 18 years. Jack also enjoyed fishing, gardening, tending to his rose bushes, cooking and golf. He also had a fondness for the Belding Library and in earlier years was active in the Belding Lions Club. Jack was married on Aug. 31, 1951, in Lowell to Elva Groenenboom, and she survives along with their children, Ross J. Middlebrook and Rebecca May of Grand Rapids, Rodd and Brenda Middlebrook of Belding; two grandchildren Chelsea and Connor; a sister, Mary Lee Moody of Ludington; and three sisters-in-law, Eileen Essenburg of Ada, Elsie Detmers of Lowell and Carolyn Hansma of New York. Jack was preceded in death by his parents. In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will greet relatives and friends for a time of visitation from 2 to 4 p.m. today at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding. A private service will take place later for the family with Pastor Ken Harger officiating. Memorial contributions may be given to Citizens for Belding’s Future, a committee for the upcoming bond proposal in support of Belding Area Schools, or to the Alvah N. Belding Library.
