Middleton, 80, of Belding, passed away Monday afternoon, May 15, 2006 at Spectrum Health United Memorial United Campus, Greenville. Margaret was bon March 21, 1926, in Missaukee County, the daughter of Ralph L. and Beatrice Nicholls Smith. Following graduation from high school, Margaret attended Michigan State University, majoring in home economics. During World War II Margaret worked at the Pentagon in the War Department, now the CIA, as a decipherer. She later attended Michigan State University, majoring in home economics. Margaret retired from the Chrysler Trim Plant in Lyons in 1986 and then went back to school at Grand Rapids Junior College, graduating in the first class receiving a degree in culinary arts. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Belding. She was married Feb. 3, 1951, in Greenville to Gerard W. Middleton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerard Middleton, in 1993; her parents; son, Shawn; and brother, Ralph “Jay” Smith. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Michele and Ricardo Hernandez of Grand Rapids, Gregg Middleton of Belding, Lisa Bouwhuis of Grand Rapids, Colin Middleton, Celia Larsen, both of Belding, Jeanine Middleton of Grand Rapids, Beth and Gray Annabel of Wayland; grandchildren, Christopher, Monique, Geanavive, Matthew, Justin, Kyle, Jake, Audrey, Gwen, Julia; great grandchildren, Christian and Dylan; brothers and sisters, Gertrude Irwin of Allendale, Rita Gilbert of Harbor Springs, Minnie Kellogg of Lowell, Inabo Reblin of Farwell, Daniel Smith of Utah, Celia Wheeler of Grand Rapids, Ursula Beecham of Largo, Fla., Mary Anne Libby of Rockford, Allen Smith of Howard City. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Belding, with Deacon Howard Scheid presiding. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today with a rosary prayed at 7:30 p.m. at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding. Memorial contributions may be given to the ALS Association or the American Diabetes Association.
