Ionia Daily Standard, 27 Oct 1895

Spencer G. Millard Dead.

He was an Ionia County Boy, on the Upward Wave of Political Prominence in
California.

Los Angeles, Cal., Oct 2_?.  Lieut. Gov. Millard died at 11:55 last night.  He
passed a quiet day up to 5 o’clock, when a decided change for the worse
appeared.  Mr. Millard was conscious almost to the end.

Deceased was born in Ionia county, Mich., in 1856, graduated from Hillsdale
college in 1877, and became principal of the Carson City, Mich., graded school.
 In the meantime he studied law, and in 1882 became a partner of William O.
Webster, an attorney in Ionia city.

In 1887 he came to California, settling in Los Angeles and practicing law.  He
took very little part in politics up to the time of his nomination for
lieutenant governor in 1894, but was noted as a brilliant orator and was
extremely popular in the southern part of the state.  After his nomination on
the republican ticket, he made a vigorous canvass of the state.  He spoke 60
consecutive nights and covered the entire state.

When his election was announced, Mr. Millard was in good health, but just before
the assembling of the legislature in January he was attacked by the grip, which
developed into pneumonia.  He was unable to attend the legislature, and as he
could not shake off the disease here, visited his father last June in Michigan.

The change did him no good, and in September he returned to California, spending
the time until last Sunday in the mountains.  It was then seen that his case was
hopeless, and on Sunday he was taken to Los Angeles in a special car.  Mr.
Millard was married in Ionia city to Miss Ida Hall, and leaves two children, a
boy and a girl.
