Another break was made in the thinning ranks of blue, when on Wednesday of last week, Dr. Gurdon H. Millard, veteran dentist of this city, was gathered in by the grim reaper and answered the last summons, following a period of several weeks sickness at the Soldiers’ Home hospital in Grand Rapids. Dr. Millard was a long time resident of this city, where he was one of the first to practice dentistry, which profession he followed for many years and until a few weeks ago when advancing age, with its accompanying infirmities caused him to close his office and retire. Dr. Millard had occupied rooms in the Vincent block for many years, close to his dental office and his retiring from his practice was due to an affliction which struck him and left him helpless for a time. He was found as he was stricken and was taken to the home of his wife, on W. Washington street, where he was nursed back to fairly good health and enjoyed several years of life before he was stricken by his last illness. Some months ago Mrs. Millard passed away and about that time the aged dentist, realizing that at best his time on earth was not to be for long, made arrangements with Bruce Fales, local undertaker, for his funeral. He had every detail planned and gave instructions to Mr. Fales as to several things which he wished to be done. He selected, with great care the casket which was to receive his body and had it stored away for future use in the Fales establishment, after which he returned to the Soldiers’ Home to patiently await for the lowering of the curtain of life, so far as he was concerned. Dr. Millard was 88 years of age at the time of his death and although for the past two years he has not been in this city a great deal, he made monthly visits here and never tired of getting down town and mixing with “the boys” as he termed every person he had grown to know during his long residence here. He was a veteran of the Civil war, having served through the greater part of the conflict between the north and south. Funeral services were held from the residence of his son, Fred Millard, of W. Washington street, Friday afternoon at two o’clock, with burial by the side of his wife, in River Ridge cemetery, Rev. H. E. Ellis, pastor of the Congregational church, officiating. Surviving are the two sons, Fred Millard, of this city, and Frank Millard, of New Haven, Connecticut. ------------------ Belding Banner-News, 29 Sep 1927, page 5 Gurdon H. In the year of 63 was married to Elizabeth Lowrie, from which union three children were born, one dying in infancy; two sons surviving, Frank Millard, residing in New Haven, Connecticut and Fred Millard, of Belding. In the year of 1868 he graduated from the profession of dentistry and in the year of 1886 moved to Belding at which place he continued his practice of dentistry until 1923 when he retired. The past three years have been spent living at the Soldiers’ home where he died September 21, 1927.
