Peter Miller, a resident of Portland for the past 12 years, expired at his home on south Kent street at 3:00 a.m. Wednesday, following a hopeless illness extending over a period of seven weeks. His affliction was originally diagnosed as gall stones, but physicians later discovered a cancerous growth in the stomach, and it was this that caused his death. Mr. Miller was in his 62nd year when the summons came, having been born at Fremont, O., October 17, 1853. He was a lad of 12 when he came to Sebewa with his parents; and until 17 years ago, when he gave up farming and located at Grand Ledge, was a continuous resident of that township. Twelve years ago he moved with his family to Portland and has resided here continuously since. His health for the past three years has been such that he was able to do but little manual labor, although he frequently worked in factories in winter and in summer devoted most of his time to his garden, which was conceded to be one of the most prolific in the village. He was a devout fisherman and seldom left the river without a big string. Sportsmen of a humorous mind frequently accused him of attaching a magnet to his hook. Mr. Miller was a great lover of the out door works of nature and to him the river and its environs were dear. Mr. Miller is survived by the widow, who was Miss Nettie Smith, of Sebewa, until her marriage to deceased March 17, 1878; a brother, Clarence Miller, of this place; four sisters, Mrs. Sylvanus Franks, of Sunfield, Mrs. Elizabeth Walker, of Grand Rapids, Mrs. John Simons of Portland, Mrs. Albert Penfield, of Battle Creek, as well as six children, the Misses Mabel, Ivah and Mary Miller, living at home, C. B. Miller, of Cicero, Ill., E. J. Miller, of Grand Rapids, and Mrs. John Rouse, of Williamston. The funeral services, which are to be held at the late residence Friday afternoon at 2:00, will be conducted by Rev. Harwood, of the Untied Brethren church and interment will take place in Portland cemetery.
