She was born in Portland Township June 21, 1894, the daughter of William and Mary (Thelen) Spitzley. She was an avid traveler, painter, and gardener, caring for her flower beds until she was 102. Mrs. Miller was a graduate of St. Mary’s School in Westphalia and was trained and worked as a practical nurse until her marriage to Romanian immigrant George M. Miller on May 6, 1919. Because of the laws at the time, she had to become a naturalized citizen, despite having been born in Michigan. The couple raised 10 children on their farm in the Portland Township community of Collins and eventually retired to Portland. Mrs. Miller later moved to Muir, where she lived independently until 1997. She then moved to live with her daughter and son-in- law in St. Johns. She was active in her community and church. She was a member of St. Patrick Parish and its Ladies Altar Society in Portland, and a member of the Collins Ladies Aid Society and the rural school board, St. Peter & Paul Parish in Ionia, the Muir-Lyons Friendship Senior Citizens Group, and the Muir-Lyons Golden Years Club. Her greatest joys in life were her family, her church, and her flowers. Surviving are children, Leon A. (Anita) of Avon Park, Fla., Helen M. Simon of Muir, Jo G. Scott of Saranac, Paul A. (Bonnie) of Ossian, Ind., Florence (Jack) Johnston of St. Johns, George L. (Lois) of Lyons, and Laurence H. (Kathleen) of Lyons; daughter-in-law, Eleanor LaFontzee of Grand Ledge and Sr. Antonio Spitzley SSJ of Nazareth; 49 grandchildren; numerous great- grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, George M. (Aug. 7, 1969); her parents; children, Francis J., Aileen M. Pinckney, and John A.; sons-in-law Martin Simon and Jack Pinckney; sisters, Theresia Spitzley, Katherine (Anthony) Willems, Ida (Joseph) Fox, and Emilie (Andrew) Tanghe; and brothers, Anthony, Louis (Thersia), Arnold (Anna), and Henry Spitzley. Funeral Mass was celebrated Jan. 20 at St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Ionia, with the Rev. Melvin Fox officiating.
