March 4, 2016 VERNON C. MILLER Vernon Calvin miller, 90, of Marquette, entered eternal life Monday evening Feb. 29, 2016. Born Jan. 20, 1926 in Ionia, a son of Milo and gladys (Richards) Miller, Vern was raised in Ionia and attended the local schools. he worked at Yeoman's Dairy before entering the U.S. Army, serving in the infantry during World War II. His military service was in Japan and during the past few years he discussed how it was one of his greatest life adventures. He deeply regretted all the lives that were lost an always said he wasn't a hero, it was just something that had to be done back then. Following his honorable discharged, Vern returned to Ionia where he married Doris Louise Burger on May 15, 1948. One of their first accomplishments as husband and wife was designing and actually building their home in Ionia. Subsequent employments for Vern included managing Ionia ConcreteProducts, serving as a draftsman for a company in Grand Rapids preparing layout designs, working as a guard/attendant at the Ionia State Hospital, and serving as a supervisor of work crews at camp Shawano, a State run camp for troubled youth in Grayling. This job moved the couple to Grayling, where they built their next home. they did all of the interior work themselves. Vern was a self-taught "Electrician" and "plumber" and found all building jobs to be fun and challenging. He enjoyed spending time with family, kayaking, cross country skiing, biking, yard work, and working with wood to create special gifts for family members. Both he and Doris loved vacation road trips taking them to many states during their lifetime. They moved to Marquette in 2013 to be near family when Vern could no longer care for Doris who was in the final progression step of Alzheimer's. Vern liked mathematics and taught himself algebra. Playing with numbers and always "figuring out something" was one of his favorite pastimes. After his daughter, Cindi, introduced him to the computer, he would spend hours on it, exploring and "figuring" out different programs. He loved all the latest gadgets and enjoyed testing on his cell, even doing a little Facebooking during the last couple of years. After moving to Marquette, he biked with his daughter, Lynda, around the area bike paths. One of his favorite paths was from the Visitor center to the Lower Harbor which runs along Lake Superior. He and his daughter enjoyed daily walks together outside when the weather was nice. During the winter months they would walk 1-2 miles in the Superior Dome. Vern is survived by his daughter, Lynda Miller-Wiklanski and husband, Paul, of Marquette; his granddaughters, Cherokee Helms-Gleason (Debbie) Brandi Kohlsmith (Bruce), Tomi Doty-Parsons (Denny), and Kim Doty-Salter (Grant); a son-in-law, Byron Doty; and 10 great-grandchildren. Vern was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Doris L. (Burger) Miller in 2013; daughter, Cindi Doty in 2000; and siblings, Elmer (Marie) Miller and Arlene (Paul) Trierweiler. Honoring Vern's request, no public services will be held. "Bagpipes are playing for you Dad." "Your soul remains with us through our enduring memories of you."
