Mr. Miller was leading a horse along the highway north of Portland when he was struck by a car driven by Leon Pung, also of Portland township. The injured man was taken to the office of Dr. R. W. Alton, at Portland, where examination revealed injuries to the head and a fractured leg. His injuries were dressed at the doctor’s office and it was thought he would recover but he soon showed signs of lapsing into unconsciousness and was rushed to the community hospital at Ionia. A vain fight to overcome the effects of the injuries to his skull was waged during the night but he died early Monday morning. Deputy Sheriff W. C. Sprague, who had been called to the scene of the accident, conducted an investigation and took a statement from Pung who claimed Mr. Miller was leading the horses along the wrong side of the road. He says that, upon seeing the man he swerved to the left to avoid hitting him but that Mr. Miller dodged to that side of the road at the same moment making the accident unavoidable. He was not held in connection with the accident. Mr. Miller is survived by a wife and two children.
