In spite of his advanced age, he has been alert and active until the last two or three years. For the last nine months he has been a great sufferer, and death came at last as a relief. Wm. Milligan was born in Cayuga county, N.Y., Dec. 21, 1828, and came to Ionia in 1851, which has been his home during the long course of his life in active manhood. He was married Sept. 2, 1853, to Miss Louisa Keeney, a sister of the late Mrs. D. A. Jewell, who died a year later, in October, 1854. He was married to the wife who survives him, Miss Minerva Murray, Nov. 9, 1856, by whom four children were born. Two sons died in infancy. Surviving are: Bertha, wife of L. P. Brock, this city, and Edith L., wife of George L. Tunison, of Los Angeles, Cal. Besides these, he leaves three grandchildren, Stuart and Gertrude Brock, and Ionia B. Tunison; and one sister, Mrs. Burr C. Andrews, of Kirksville, Mo. Mr. and Mrs. Milligan went to California about three years ago, and while there celebrated the golden anniversary of their wedding, in 1906, at which there were present sixty-five Ionians. Mr. Milligan was a carpenter and building contractor, and his work is in evidence on many structures in the county. He enlisted in Co. F. First Michigan Engineers and Mechanics, in August, 1862, and served until close of war, being orderly sergeant of his company at date of muster out. The same conscientious devotion to duty characterized him as a soldier that was in evidence in civil life. He was one of the charter members of the Church of Christ, of which he remained a devoted adherent and constant attendant. No event of his life gave him greater satisfaction than the fact that he was able to attend the recent celebration of the 50th anniversary of the organization of the Ionia church. Mr. Milligan was a man destitute of malice. He wished the best for all his fellows. He was especially fond of children, and gave evidence of his love for them even in the delirium of his last days. The funeral service will be at the home, 168 Adams street, on Thursday, at 3 p.m. A good man has gone to his rest.
