Born and Died in Same Township. Places of Birth and Death but Short Distance Apart in Portland – Paralysis, Supplemented by Grieving for Loss of Grandson, Cause of Death – Was Honest, Upright Man and Good Citizen. Funeral Largely Attended. Just about a year ago now Dudley O. Miner, who lived on the John Probert place west of town, suffered a stroke of paralysis from which he partly recovered, but had not since been what he was in sturdy manhood before that time. A week ago Saturday night he was again stricken and this time the stroke was fatal, he dying the following Tuesday night. Mr. Miner, while but 68 years of age, was probably the oldest continuous inhabitant of Portland, he having been born here and he never called any other place than Portland his home; and the turn of the dial of time so brought about the circumstances that he died but a short distance from the farm where he was born, his father, John I. Miner, having been one of the earliest pioneers of this section. The subject of this sketch was born in a log house on a part of what is now the fine farm owned by Norton Green? in the northwest part of Portland township. Afterward Mr. Miner owned the farm formerly owned by his father, and still later he owned the farm now owned by J.O. Hendee at Christian Bend. From there Mr. Miner went to the Jay Maynard place which he rented for a number of years. For several years past he has lived in the vicinity where he died. Since the death of his grandson of ten years of age a few months ago Mr. Miner has mourned constantly over the loss, which to him was irreparable and he was inconsolable in his grief. His family says this fact no doubt hastened his death. He is survived beside the widow by Clara and Fred Miner, Mmes. Ernest LaSalle and Herbert Tubbs, all of Portland, and number of more distant relatives. Mr. Miner carried a policy for $2000 in the Northwestern Mutual of Milwaukee payable to his wife. He had been in this company many years. Funeral services were conducted from his late home last Thursday afternoon by Rev. Stewart of Greenville, who is an intimate friend of the family and were largely attended.
