He had been one of the most active and prominent persons here since the village was started in 1887. He was one of the few remaining pioneers of the village. Mr. Miner was born July 4, 1803, north of Lake Odessa, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Horace F. Miner, who opened up a store at Bonanza Corners in 1876 at which time Otis began his mercantile life. In 1881 he was taken into the business as a partner and the firm name was changed to H. F. Miner & Son. The village of Lake Odessa was started in the spring of 1887, and during the following spring the firm moved its store building and stock to the new village to the south. Seeing the need for a hotel in the rapidly growing village the senior member erected the three story structure now known as the Senters Apartments, and named it the Miner Hotel. The store, which was located on the next lot north of the hotel, was turned over to the son Otis, in 1892 who continued the business until he retired in 1929. Mr. Miner, intensely interested in his home town, took an active part in general public affairs. He was appointed postmaster here in 1905 and held that office until 1913. He was the first chief of the local fire department and continued in that capacity about 15 years. He was prominently identified with the Knights of Pythias lodge for many years, and was a director of the old Lake Odessa State Savings Bank over a long period of time. Mr. Miner was made a justice of the peace some 12 or 15 years ago and continued to hold that position until after he became confined to his home. In later years he was employed in the credit department of the Lake Odessa Canning Co. for 10 or 12 years until failing health force his retirement a couple of years ago. Mr. Miner was first united in marriage to Mrs. Dora Stowell who later died, and then a few years later, in 1906, he took as a life partner Mrs. Jennie Roe. To this union a daughter, now Mrs. Thurlow Nicol, was born. Surviving are the widow, the daughter, two step-children, Mrs. G. William Brummeler in Grand Rapids, and Neil W. Roe, Lake Odessa. Funeral services were held at the home Monday afternoon with a cousin, the Rev. Irving Minor of Kalamazoo officiating. Burial was in Lakeside cemetery.
