H. O. Young, chief of American Graves registration, New York Port of Embarkation. The body of Pfc. Gerald L. Misner who was killed in Korea August 30 will arrive in Ionia Tuesday aboard the 5:17 p.m. train and will be removed to the Boynton funeral home where services will be conducted by the Rev. Howard Johnson of Troy, Ill., formerly of Ionia, Wednesday at 2 p.m. Interment will be in Easton cemetery. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Misner of Lansing, formerly of Ionia, and the grandson of Mrs. Etta Roberts of West Yeomans St. Pfc. Misner was born in Ionia and attended local schools. He lived all his life here until a few years ago when his family moved to Lansing. Misner enlisted in the U.S. Army in January, 1949. After receiving his basic training at Ft. Breckenridge, Ky., he spent a ten-day furlough at home. At the end of his furlough he reported to Camp Hood, Texas, for more training. He was given a 30-day furlough last June and then reported to Ft. Lawton, Wash., for shipment overseas. Upon his arrival overseas, he was to be stationed in Japan. The outbreak of Korean hostilities caused his entire outfit to be sent to the trouble spot and it was there he was killed near the end of August. His family was notified May 15 that his body was en route home for burial. ---- Final rites for Pfc. Gerald L. Misner, 19, of Lansing, formerly of Ionia, were conducted Wednesday afternoon at the Boynton funeral home. Misner was the first Ionia veteran killed in the Korean conflict to be returned home for burial. The body arrived in Ionia aboard the 5:17 p.m. train Tuesday. The Rev. Howard Johnson of Troy, Ill, former pastor of the Lincoln Avenue Baptist church, officiated at the service. Bearers were Julius Funk, Carl Seabrook, Paul Leslie and Ralph Leland. Military services were conducted at Easton cemetery with members of the Saranac American Legion and V.F.W. and the Ionia Legion, V.F.W., Amvets and auxiliary participating. Charles Theisen commanded the firing squad made up entirely of Saranac men including Harold Hauter, Bryce Baie?, Robert Chase, Jack Thomas, Bernard DeHaan, Clayton Lowrey, Elwood Larson and Burdette Lampman. Members of the Saranac color guard were Phil Grieves and Earl Sandborn while Don Sweet and Earl Houserman of Saranac were color bearers. Ionia color bearers were P.J. O’Connor, Michael Wieczorek, jr. and John Leland. Saranac post chaplain was Earl Thorp. Frank Wirtz sounded taps.
