Tom died in Boulder, Colorado after a brave struggle with death, having fought it unflinchingly several years. He was courageous in the battle with the grim monster and full of hope that at last he would be victorious. His friends, and they were limited only by the number of acquaintances formed, are sorrow stricken at the untimely end of so promising a young life. In his efforts to release himself from the grasp of the destroyer, he tried the western air of the Dakotas, Montana and Colorado, but relief came for a brief season only and after returning from a trip the mountains, in a few days passed to the summer land where all suffering is at an end, in the presence of his mother and sister. He was conscious in his last moments, the end came suddenly and for a moment the dark curtain which death unrolls just before the breaking of life’s link, was before his eyes and he remarked to Bertha of the darkness which was overshadowing him. He was born December 6, 1869, in Smyrna; educated in the Smyrna and Belding schools and graduated from both; taught school two terms and was elected school inspector two terms. The funeral services were held in the church near the old home which he loved so dearly, under the auspices of the Masonic order and at his request Rev. R. A. McConnell officiated. His uncles acted as pall bearers also at his request. Members of the Belding graduating class were present and brought a beautiful floral offering, as did the Masonic order and many other friends. The casket was nearly buried with these tokens of love and respect.
