The sleigh was scattered into a thousand pieces, but the horses, fortunately, escaped without injury. The front of the locomotive was badly smashed, and it is now in the shops here undergoing repairs. Another Publication: The Ionia Sentinel, Friday, February 21, 1879 Jas. Monks, in the employ of the Wager Lumber Co., was instantly killed at a railroad crossing, near Sheridan, on Monday night. He was drawing logs, and being deaf did not notice the approach of the evening passenger train from the south, until too late. The train struck the fore part of the sled, knocking the logs through the air like so many pipe-stems, some of them striking the ground 150 feet from the place of collision, and throwing Mr. Monks some distance. Mr. Monks was an old and respected citizen of this county, having resided in Keene, near Saranac, since 1837, engaged in farming. He was 70 years of age, and leaves a large family. He had been at work in the woods only about three weeks previous to the time of the accident.
