Dec. 26, 1970 William J. Monks, 51, of 1407 New York Avenue, Lansing, a former resident of Ionia, died Thursday afternoon of an apparent heart attack. He was driving his car when stricken and had pulled to the side of the road. Born in Saranac December 15, 1919, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Monks. He was a World-War II Veteran and was married in Lansing, April 17, 1942 to Clara A. Welch. He was a former owner of Ed’s Refinery on M21, Ionia and presently employed by Lansing school board at Pleasant Grove School as maintenance man. He was a resident of Lansing eight years. Surviving besides the wife, Clara, are two sons, Paul Monks of Coldwater and Dale Monks of Muir; two step-sons, Phillip Welch of Ionia and Hazel Welch, Jr., of Lansing; six stepdaughters, Mrs. Lawrence Clark of Ionia, Mrs. R.J. Bradley of Orleans, Mrs. Russell Meeuwsen of Cascade, Mrs. Eugene Wright of Grand Rapids, Mrs. Kenneth Ferguson of Ionia and Mrs. Paul Galloway of Lansing; mother, Mrs. Louise Monks of Hubbardston; two brothers, Lawrence Monks of Clarksville and Melmott Monks of Lowell; sister, Mrs. Catherine Miller of Saranac; 47 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be Monday at 2 pm at Myers-Roetman funeral home in Ionia. Interment will be at Balcom cemetery.
