She was born January 9, 1921 in Solon Township, Kent County. Ruth attended schools in Cedar Springs and Pierson, later graduating from Sand Lake High School in 1939. She attended Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant and graduated from the Butterworth School of Nursing with a three-year diploma. Ruth and her husband moved to Lake Odessa in 1950. For the next 23 years she assisted in managing her husband's business, Montague heating and Sheetmetal. Ruth was a member of Lake Odessa's Central United Methodist Church. As a member of the Red Cross since 1943, Ruth participated in the local Bloodmobile program for 30 years. She was certified as Red Cross Advanced First Aid and Emergency Care Instructor and serving as a Lake Odessa ambulance attendant. Ruth helped to start the first Lake Odessa Ambulance Service. Since 1976 she had been a participant in the Harvard University Medical School Nurses' Health Study. Ruth also worked at Pennock Hospital as a registered nurse. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, George A. in 1992; by her parents, Ray C. and Mary A. (DeWolf) VerBurg of Lowell; sisters, Alice L. Kelly and Mary Ellen VerBurg. She is survived by her three daughters, Margaret A. (Joseph F.) Powers of Riva, MD, Phyllis J. (Robert J.) Smith of Vashon, WA, and Mary L. (Patrick J.) Flannery of Lake Odessa; one brother, Joseph R. VerBurg (Betty) of Claremont, CA; one sister, Jean (Richard) Bewell of Lowell; sister-in-law, Pauline Davis of Cookeville, TN. Other survivors include three grandchildren, Meridith (Fred) Cook, Jerod Cleland Brenna Flannery; two great-grandchildren; three nephews and one niece. Visitation for Ruth will be held 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, October 10 at the Koops Funeral Chapel, 935 4th Avenue, Lake Odessa. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 11, 2012 at the Koops Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memory contributions may be made to the Central United Methodist Church, Lake Odessa; Thornapple Manor Patient Activity Fund, Hastings; or Manna's Market Food Bank, Woodland.
