Ionia Deer Hunter Dies In Traverse

Judson Montgomery,31, 512 Nicholson street, the father of three small children, 
died Sunday in a Traverse City hospital of gunshot wounds suffered Thursday 
while hunting in Kalkaska county, five miles west of South Boardman.

His death was the seventh fatality from gunfire in Michigan's deer hunting 
season.

State police said Montgomery was shot in the right hop by Robert Cronk, 35, of 
Kalamazoo, who accidently discharged his rifle while unloading it. The missile 
passed through the right hip and the body and lodged in his left hip.

Montgomery's father, who was hunting with him, accompanied his son to the 
Kalkaska Health Center where he was given emergency treatment before being 
transferred to Munson hospital in Traverse City.

Officers planned no action against Cronk.

Funeral services will be held for Judson R. Montgomery Wednesday afternoon at 2 
o'clock at Myers funeral home. The Rev. George Rentschler will officiate and 
interment will be at Easton cemetery. 

Mr. Montgomery was born April 27, 1924 in Ionia township. July 26, 1946 he was 
married to Josephine Wirtz. He spent 37 months in the Pacific theater; had a 
victory medal of the Asiatic-Pacific theater; a bronze star; four overseas bars 
and one service stripe. 

Survivors are his wife, Josephine, three children, Ralph J. 8, Olivia Jo, 6, 
and Karen Sue, 2; two brothers, Robert and Jack of Ionia; two sisters, Jo An 
Strickling of Ionia and Marion at home; and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph 
Montgomery.
