Moon was born February 23, 1835, in Monroe County, N.Y., came to Michigan with his parents in 1845 and settled on the old farm in the northwestern part of Otisco Township. He worked on the farm and attended common school until 14 years of age. He then clerked in a store in Smyrna one year, afterward in Mr. Jas. Kidd’s store at Kiddville on and off for three years, attending school and teaching occasionally a term. About two years were spent in a mill at Muskegon and then three years in a clerkship at Grand Rapids, during which time he was married to Miss Mary F. Thompson and spent the first year of married life in the Valley City. In the spring of 1859, they came from Grand Rapids to their present home in Eureka Township which was then a wooded wilderness, from which the present improvements have been wrought, the old log house giving place to the pleasant residence; ornamental shrubbery, flowers and fruit trees taking the place of the native forest. Mr. Moon was a thorough business man, serving as justice of the peace for several terms and has held many other offices of trust, having the full confidence of those who knew him best; was a staunch Republican and unwavering hi his political views. He made a public profession of the religion when he was 30 years old, since which time he has been identified with the Church of Christ, sharing liberally in its state, home and foreign mission work, in the support and spread of the gospel, His companion, three brothers, two sisters, with other relatives, neighbors and friends mourn his sudden departure, he having been stricken down in the midst of an active life. He died at his home Friday evening February 25, 1898, of neuralgia of the heart, having driven from Greenville but a few hours before. The funeral took place from the residence March 1st, Rev. W.L. Monger speaking from the text, “Therefore, be ye also ready.” His words were calculated to inspire one to an abiding home through thoughtful watchfulness, which together with the consoling words of song sweetly and tenderly rendered by Mrs. W.A. Wilder and Miss Edith Smith of Belding, made this a service long to be remembered, and we trust of lasting good to all.
