He selected the land west of Caoks Corners, where his home has been for the past fifty-two years, when it was a wilderness, taking the land direct from the government under the preemption law, and by his strong arm and indomitable will made the wilderness blossom like a rose. He experienced all the hardships and privations incident to pioneer life of fifty years ago, which means much more than pioneer life at this day. By his honesty and integrity he gained the confidence and respect of all with whom he associated. His seventy- four years fell lightly on his shoulders, as he always enjoyed good health, never having called a physician until a week ago. The deceased was born in Antwerp, Jefferson Co., N.Y. Jan. 16, 1820, On Jan. 17, 1847, he was married to Lydia M. Russell. Six children were born to them, four of whom are still living – Adelbert L., Frank L., Dayton F., and Alton. After thirty-seven years of wedded life his wife was called to a higher plane. Sept. 21, 1884, he married Mrs. A.M. Loomis, who survives him. His death occurred on Saturday afternoon and the funeral, which was largely attended, was held at the Otisco church, Hon. L.V. Moulton, of Grand Rapids, officiating.
