Verily “in the midst of life we are in death” and the hour is not known when we shall be cut down. Dayton Fremont Moon died Wednesday morning of an illness lasting only about a week or ten days. He was taken ill on the streets with vomiting, and Dr. Dutt prescribed for him. He went home, and later his physician, Dr. Bell, was called, who found him suffering considerably. His condition not responding to treatment. Dr. Richard Smith, of Grand Rapids, was called Sunday in consultation, but considered an operation unnecessary. Mr. Moon grew gradually worse and the end came at 4 o’clock in the morning February 2. The deceased was 53 years old last July, and having been born during the Fremont and Dayton campaign was named in honor of those distinguished men. The old Moon homestead near Cook’s Corners was his birthplace. He spent a few years in the west where he lost his first wife, later returning to Cook’s Corners and engaged in trade. About five or six years ago he, with Mr. Potter, came to Belding and located in Smith’s store on Bridge street, disposing of it during the past summer. Recently he had been buying and shipping poultry and cream. Mr. Moon was a man very highly respected and one of our best citizens. He leaves a wife, two sons, Harry and Kenneth, and two daughters, Grace and Bessie. He was a member of the Odd Fellow lodge in this city and also of the Gleaners. The funeral will be held Friday at his late home at 1:30 p.m. Rev. Edrie Collins will officiate. A postmortem was held Wednesday night by Dr. Richard Smith, with all the physicians in the city present on invitation of Dr. Bell, which revealed a gangrenous condition of the appendix and general diffused peritonitis, from which no help could have resulted from an operation before death. His sudden and unexpected taking away is a sad blow to his family, friends and community.
