Moon was taken originally to the Ionia Memorial Hospital and was later transferred to Grand Rapids. He received a skull fracture and fractured pelvis and hip. The accident occurred on M-66 a mile north of the Woodard Lake intersection in front of the Byron Haskin home. Moon was driving a two-ton truck toward Ionia after fishing at Long Lake last Saturday afternoon. The truck was reported by Undersheriff Leo Fuller to have gone out of control and run up a five foot bank where it overturned. Two companions were in the cab with Moon and two friends who were swimming at Long lake had caught a ride and were riding in the box. None of the other four was seriously hurt. When the accident occurred, Fuller said, Moon was thrown out and the heavy truck tipped over catching Moon under the left running board. Residents in the area tipped the truck back over to release Moon and he was brought to Ionia by ambulance. Coroner Harry Myers said Saturday morning that he had ordered an investigation of the accident in which Moon was injured. He said Undersheriff Leo Fuller would conduct the investigation either Monday or Tuesday. Sentinel-Standard, Tuesday, July 13, 1948 -Irvin Moon- Funeral services of Irvin Moon, who died in Butterworth hospital in Grand Rapids Friday, as a result of injuries received in an automobile accident, were held Monday at 2 p.m. from the Boynton funeral home. The Rev. Wayne Davis officiated and interment was at Balcom cemetery. The funeral was in charge of the VFW under the direction of Charles Allen. Officers assisting him were Peter O'Connor, Ora Woodard, and Larson Knowles. Color bearers were Charles Allen and Robert Read. Pallbearers were Lyle Houghton, Albert Houserman, Roman Slowinski, Leo Kaulson, and George Schlappi. The VFW auxiliary attended in a group. Flowers were in charge of Mrs. Bessie Bussell and Mrs. Dave Steadman. The Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct military funeral services for the deceased from the Boynton funeral home Monday, July 12 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Wayne Davis officiating. Interment will be at Balcom cemetery. Moon was born June 21, 1891, the son of Anna and Chauncey Moon of Berlin township. He was a veteran of World War I, serving in the 38th infantry, 3rd division in France. He saw action in the battles of St. Mihiel Meuse and the Argonne and received his discharge august 29, 1919. He was a member of the VFW, the Loyal Order of the Moose and of Banner Grange in Orleans. Surviving him are a daughter, Celia Ann; three step-children; three brothers, Charles, Wilbur and George, all of Tremayne's Corners; and two sisters, Lula and Nina Moon, with whom he made his home. Moon was owner of a private trucking business.
