Deceased was the son of John and Mary Moore of Lancaster Co., Pa. He was born on March 6, 1826, and was the youngest of ten children, eight sons and two daughters, the three youngest sons begin Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. All of this renowned family passed to that happy shore many years preceding Uncle Jacob. The wife of Abraham, Hannah R. Moore of Pontiac, who was present at the funeral, is the only one whom God has spared. Deceased was married on Dec. 21, 1848, to Mary E. Hoar, at Strasburg, Lancaster Co., Pa., and straightway came to Michigan, settling in Oakland county, for a period of sixteen years. On April 5, 1864, he came to Ionia, which has since been his home. To this union were born four children, two of whom survive, viz: Mrs. E.L. Haight and John H. Moore; also ten grandchildren and one great- grandchild. His beloved wife preceded him twenty-nine years ago. What a privilege that his children and so many of his grandchildren could be present at his death bed. Lee E. Haight, who was in Chicago at the time of his sudden summons, was unable to reach here. Mr. Moore was converted at the age of 23 in the M.E. faith, of which he has been a most ardent follower nearly sixty years. The funeral was held at the M.E. church at 2:30 p.m., Rev. M.L. Fox, pastor of the church, officiating. The text was taken from Second Timothy, verses 4 to 7: “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” This was one of the favorite passages of scripture of the deceased. The hymns sung were also favorites, being “Jesus, Lover of My Soul,” “Lead Kindly Light,” and “Asleep in Jesus.” A letter of sympathy was read from Rev. D.M. Ward of Hubbardston, an intimate friend of Mr. Moore. Interment took place in Highland Park cemetery. Those present at the funeral from out of town were, Mrs. Hannah R. Moore, her son, Wm. Moore, and daughter, Mrs. Mary Klump of Pontiac; Wm. Harlan and Henry Johnson of Livonia; David Houldershaw and daughter, and Samuel Davis of Farmington, and Mr. Mitchener of Howard City. “Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord, they may rest from their labors, and their works do follow them.” File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/mi/ionia/obits/m/moore15114nob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/mifiles/ File size: 2.8 Kb
