Moore, president of the village of Portland, died shortly before 11 o’clock Saturday evening of pneumonia, after a week’s battle with the disease. Around him were his wife, his brothers and nephews, but his last hours were passed in a state of unconsciousness. Perry N. Moore was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Sept. 26, 1844. As a lad he found employment in a factory, but when the war broke out he enlisted in Co. K, 12th Ind. At Richmond, Ky., he was taken prisoner but was soon exchanged and 10 days after his departure for the war he was home on a two week’s parole, the result of the exchange. On the expiration of his parole he went to the front and remained with his regiment until the close of the war. He was with the bedraggled army that passed in grand review at Washington after Lee and Johnson had surrendered. He returned to Fort Wayne, but a brother-in-law urged him to come to Michigan, and he settled in Portland in 1869. The same year he married Miss Angie Taylor of Sebewa, who survives him. They had one son, but he died many years ago. For twenty-five years Mr. Moore has filled positions of trust in his township and village, having held the offices of clerk, trustee, member of the school board, justice of the peace, township treasurer and president of the village to which position he was reelected about a month ago. The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. being conducted by the Masonic lodge of Portland. During the hour of the services every business place in the village was closed out of respect for deceased.
