Moore, (“Big John”), 79 years old, of Grand Rapids, formerly of Greenville and Rockford, died on Sunday March 30 after an extended illness. John was the son of Jacob and Mary Theo (Goodwin) Moore and grew up in Ionia. He starred as a center in basketball all through high school and played under Pete Newell at Michigan State University where he graduated with a degree in Ornamental Horticulture. His service to his country began in college in the Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps and in active duty in the US Army in post-WWII in Germany as a First Lieutenant. For 40 years he was a financial advisor with IDS and American Express Financial Planners. Throughout his life he was an avid vegetable gardener and baker, sharing the fruits of his labors with many friends and relatives. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Greenville, Greenville Rotary Club and the MSU Varsity Club. He is survived by his wife of 56 years Patricia (Kelly) Moore; his children, Kristine (David) Hassan of Rockford, Karen (Mike) Barker of Ravenna, Kimberly (Jerry) Smith of Antigo, Wis. and John (Katie) Moore of Houston, Texas; his grandchildren, Katherine (Luke) Hertzfeld, Karla (Andrew) Goetz and Jessica Moore; his sister, Leora Stutes; many nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, Marion Stutes; sisters-in-law, Roberta (Gordon) Delamarter of Ionia and Rhoda Reini (John Seidis) of Hudsonville and his best friend Charlie Goodmiller. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Mary (Vern) Stretch and Kathleen (Sterrey) Stout. Visitation will be Saturday April 5, 2008 at 1 p.m. in the Hurst Funeral Home, Greenville, Mich. The memorial Service will follow at 2 p.m. with Pastor Ken Harger presiding. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to MSU Athletic Scholarship Fund in care of the Athletic Development Office, MSU, 200 Spartan Way, East Lansing, MI 48824-4005 in memory of Big John Moore.
