Albert F. Morehouse Portland’s “Grand Old Man,” Dies at Age of 88 Years. Albert F. Morehouse passed away at 10 o’clock on Sunday morning. Deceased was born in Livingston, Essex Co., N. J., Jan. 13, 1818. He was of Puritan descent and his father lived to be 86 years of age, his mother passing away the year following, at about the same age. He attended the local school until he learned the carpenter trade, going then to Newark, N. J. He lived in Troy, N. Y., and New Orleans, La., before moving to Portland in May, 1843. Here he kept at his trade, buying the farm which he owned and paying for clearing it out of money earned at his trade. He built the Churchill store, now occupied by O. C. Allen’s meat market, and also the Churchill home, which was about the last large job he undertook. In 1863 he gave up working at his trade and took the little office which Squire Newman had just given up, doing a general insurance, collection and loan business. At this time he was not in the easy circumstances in which he found himself in later years, but people trusted him because of his honesty and he handled large sums of money. In 1862 he was elected Supervisor, but next became a justice of the peace, then township clerk, and was director of this school district for 20 years. In 1863-4 he was the sergeant-at-arms of the Michigan house of representatives and was well known among the politicians of the state in those days. Mr. Morehouse’s wife died a year ago last September, and his daughter, Gertrude, three years ago next August. He sincerely mourned and missed them but his eyes never filled with tears. He anticipated a happy meeting soon and to him it was but a short farewell. The children are as follows: Edwin Forrest Morehouse, Los Angeles, Cal., who telegraphs that he cannot come because of his health; Cass Morehouse, Wyoming, Ill., Mrs. Estella Buehman, Ariz; Mrs. A. H. Pettit, Mobile, Ala.; Mrs. D. A. Chipman, Grand Rapids, Mich.; H. J. Morehouse, Mahommet, Ill.; D.C. Morehouse, Pesotum, Ill. Mr. Morehouse was serving his 20th years as secretary of the Masonic lodge, a position which he filled with the greatest of care. He was one of the most faithful members of the order. He arranged that his Masonic effects shall be inherited by his son-in-law, Mr. Buehman, who is also prominent in Masonic circles in his state. Mr. Morehouse was very active in the organization of the Ionia County Pioneer society; was one of the past Presidents of the society, and ever an active and ardent member. Mr. Morehouse was a prominent member of the People’s Mutual Fire Insurance Co, and chairman of its board of directors. He helped Secretary Stevenson adjust a loss in Westphalia only last Thursday. Burial on Thursday, with Masonic honors.
