J. McCroban) in Indianapolis, Ind., to which city the family removed from Owosso a few weeks since. Miss Mable Morehouse of Grand Rapids, daughter of deceased, received word not later than last Friday that her father, although he had been somewhat poorly for a few days prior to that time, was enjoying his usual health at the time the letter was written so that the news of his death came as a shock and surprise to his relatives here and at Grand Rapids. The immediate case of his death was diabetes. The remains were brought to Portland on the noon train Monday and funeral services held from the Baptist church Tuesday forenoon and interment made in Portland cemetery. Jephthae B. Morehouse was a native of Newark N. J., in which city he was born June 5, 1825, making his age 72 last June. He came to Portland in 1847. He was originally a Congregationalist but in 1855 he united with the Portland Baptist church, of which he remained a member to the time of his death. He was a carpenter and joiner by trade, and for time years after coming here worked for his brother Albert, the first work he did in this line in Portland being upon the building which originally stood on the corner just east of the Welch House. He also worked upon the Methodist church when it was erected, A. F. Morehouse having had the contract. He afterwards engaged in business on his own hook and amount the buildings he erected was the Congregational church building. He afterwards engaged in the planning mill business with W. R. Bowser and the last Rev. Harvey Pettit, the firm building the original building of the present Portland Furniture Co.’s plant. He afterwards engaged in the furniture business with E. W. Blanchard and then went upon the road for various firms until a couple of years ago, when he was obliged to give up on account of his physical condition which had been very much shocked at the time of the great Johnstown flood, he having been there at that time and came very near losing his life the fright from which produced a nervousness from which he never recovered and which, after a time, prevented him from transacting business in which writing formed a part. He leaves three daughters May McCrohan of Indianapolis, Ind., Phebe Atherton of Flint, and Mabel Morehouse of Grand Rapids. Mr. Morehouse was twice married, his first wife having been a sister of Deacon Isaac E. Tyler of Orange; and his second wife was formerly Josephine (Sandborn) Davis, who died about three years ago.
