The Lake Odessa Wave, Thursday, January 28, 1943
Merlin G. Morgan, son of Homer Morgan and the last Mrs. Morgan, was born June 
3, 1892 in Eaton County.  The family moved to Lake Odessa when Merlin was a 
young boy and he attended school here.  For a few years the family lived in 
Lansing and during this time Merlin graduated form Central High there.  He 
early showed a remarkable aptness in all his work.  He, as a young man, 
entered the employ of E. G. Tew & Sons.  Then being offered a salesmanship for 
the Gold Medal flour, he moved to Omaha.  Returning to Lake Odessa he entered 
the employ of Ed Shellhorn, clothier, until the latter’s store burned in 1922 
and the stock was closed out.  In 1924 he began working for the Lake Odessa 
Canning Co. where he was steadily promoted until he became secretary-treasurer 
and one of the directors of the company.  He had the confidence of the 
officials and employees and was relied on for detail of the canning 
procedure.  He had been village president, clerk and treasurer, and a member 
of the F.&A.M. in Lake Odessa.

He was stricken with a heart attack Saturday and was taken to Pennock hospital 
in Hastings, Sunday night, where he died early Monday morning of coronary 
thrombosis.  

On June 26, 1916 he was married to Miss Walburga Hesley of Elk Rapids.  
Surviving him besides his wife is his father Homer Moran of Lake Odessa and a 
few distant relatives and many friends and associates.  

The funeral was largely attended at the Worley & Baine chapel Wednesday 
afternoon with the Rev. A. E. Gay of Fremont officiating.  Pall bearers were 
Walter A. Reed, Neil W. Roe, Forrest E. Branch, Dr. M. A. Hoffs, Leon T. 
Gilson, and W. C. McCartney.  Burial was in Lakeside cemetery.
