The subject of this sketch was a native of County Kerry, Ireland, where he was born April 1st, 1824, and 22 years later he came to American and settled in New York state. About six years later he located in Grand Rapids and when the old Detroit & Milwaukee railroad was built he was boss of a grading gang. He married Mary Callahan of Grand Rapids in 1856, and she and a family of children consisting of Michael, John, Mrs. Tony Leik, James and Margaret of Portland, and Mrs. P. Long of Fowler, survive him. Funeral services over his remains were conducted from the Catholic church Monday forenoon by Fr. Auer and burial made in Portland cemetery. Mr. Moriarty was one of those big-hearted Irish gentlemen which the Emerald Isle has produced and sent to this country, and who have done so much to maintain the reputation of the “ould sod” for hospitality and other sterling qualities.
