The friends of the Claude Carpenter families were greatly shocked by the news that came over the wire Thursday morning stating that a daughter Mrs. Gladys Morris had just passed away. Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter received a message Wednesday evening to come soon as Mrs. Morris was very low in the Pontiac hospital. They left immediately and arrived before the daughter passed away. Wortly & Baine, undertakers, left early to bring the body to Lake Odessa where the funeral will be held, the time for which has not been set. Many people have already expressed sympathy for the husband and the six children left motherless. ---- Mrs. Gladys Morris Funeral Held Sat. Body Brought to Home of Parents Mr. and Mrs. Claude B. Carpenter. Burial at Lakeside. The body of Gladys Morris was taken Friday to the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Claude B. Carpenter on Fifth avenue to remain until Saturday when the burial service took place, with most of the large family in attendance, and many sympathizing friends. Gladys lived most of her life in Lake Odessa, where she was a popular girl especially in her high school work. She graduated in 1909, the other members of her class were Gretchen Scheidt-O’Meara and Beulah Bowerman-Klahn, now deceased; Dr. Bert H. Shepard, Lowell; Clyde Batdorff, Lansing; Mildred Geddis, Spokane, Wash.; Edna Showerman-Burkle, Woodland; Marjorie Holly-Shearston, Miami, Fla.; Elizabeth Percival-Crawford, Evart, and Alice Wright of Grand Ledge. Mrs. Morris was preceded in death by two sisters, Gertrude and Mrs. Lottie Batdroff. She leaves besides her husband six children named below, five sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Gaylia Bradley, Ypsilanti; Mrs. Maxine VanHouten, Lansing; Mrs. Frances Hoyland, Newark, N.J.; Miss Dorothy, Richland, and Miss Mary of Ann Arbor; Henry, Detroit, and Hobart of Lake Odessa, these, with other relatives and friends, regret the great loss to this family of children. The funeral service was held in Lake Odessa at the home of her parents Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter, Saturday afternoon, Rev. A. T. Cartland officiating. Appropriate musical numbers were sung by L. T. Gilson and Mrs. W. C. McCartney accompanied by Mrs. L .T. Gilson. Burial was in Lakeside cemetery. Among those from away to attend the funeral was an aunt Mrs. Lottie Davis of Lansing, another uncle Mr. and Mrs. George Carpenter of Remus, another uncle Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Cooper and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Hewitt of Woodland, Glenn Morris, Mr. and Mrs. Hall, and Mr. and Mrs. John VanGeison of Orleans. Obituary Gladys Carpenter was born April 7, 1890, in Town 937, Perkins county, Nebraska. When three weeks old she came with her parents and two older sisters, Gertrude and Gaylia, to Woodland where the family lived until they moved to Lake Odessa in the spring of 1897, when Gladys was seven years old. Here in Lake Odessa she grew to womanhood, attending school and graduating with the class of 1909 from the high school. She later attended the Ferris institute in Big Rapids and taught school for several years. She was united in marriage with Parker Morris of Orleans in 1913. Since her marriage her life has been spent mostly in Lake Odessa, except for a number of years in Orleans, Hastings and Clawson. She was the devoted mother of six children: Edward, Robert, Marian, Junior, Jeane, and Wayne. Her life was the usual life of a busy, loving wife and mother.
