She was born on Nov. 13, 1920, in Ionia the daughter of August Heinrich Friederich Zander, inventor of the sliver screen, and his wife, Gertrude Rose (Darling). She was married to Earl Lewis Morrison Sr. on Jan. 24, 1937, in Ionia in the Presbyterian manse by Rev. Adam Westmaas. The couple spent their entire married life in Ionia. She was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. While Earl served in World War II, Agnes restored the home in which the church’s earliest services were held. This became their home for nearly 60 years. Agnes belonged to, and held offices in various ladies church groups including the PTL, choir and was a charter member of the altar guild. She made many of the church linens. Agnes taught Sunday school for 32 years and helped with Vacation Bible School regularly. She was the main substitute teacher for the Lutheran school for 25 years, as well as a tutor. Her main areas of study were English, business and home economics. Although she was mainly a wife and mother, Agnes also worked part-time at Hafner’s Floral, the D. & C Store and Montgomery Ward. She was the seamstress for Morrison’s Upholstery for 20 years until ill health forced her to relinquish her position. Agnes was a gifted soprano who sang solos for church services and weddings. She was a talented artist in oils and other media. Agnes was also accomplished in needle arts and sewing and made many wedding gowns. She also enjoyed flowers, gardening, cooking, Scottish and German cultures and playing piano. Agnes, a sweet, kind, loving person and a joy to be with is survived by her husband, Earl; her son, Earl (Janice) Morrison of Ypsilanti; daughters, Polly (Wayne) McKendry of Cary, N.C., Merilee (David) Morrison-Cotter of Ionia, and Diana (Ronald) Jewell of Fenwick; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; as well as sisters, Dora Miller of Ionia, Doris (Richard) Campbell of Lansing, Cynthia Lujan of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Trudy Sheldon of Saranac; brothers, Robert Zander of Milwaukee, Wis. and Sylvester (Bea) Zander of Lyons; her aunt, Mary Gomez of Riverview; as well as several generations of nieces and nephews. Agnes was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Laura Schultis; brother, Laurence Zander; and twin half-brothers, Rudolf and Rodney Zander. Visiting times for Agnes M. Morrison were 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Monday, and will be 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, at Cook Funeral Home, Rich Street Chapel, Ionia. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Ionia, with Pastor Paul Yanke officiating. Pallbearers will be Christopher McKendry, Scott McKendry, Wayne McKendry, David F. Cotter, David Cotter II and Ronald Jewell. Interment will be in Highland Park Cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.
