Ionia Sentinel, 24 Jan 1879

Joseph Morrison, Senior, was born in Colerain, Berkshire Co, Mass., Dec. 14th 
1788.  While young he removed with his parents to Washington county N.Y.  In 
1818, to Indiana, in 1820, to Ill, and in 1825, to Mich., settling on a farm in 
the town of Pontiac, Oct. 1st.

In 1864 he removed to Ionia.  Being an early settler in Oakland county he 
viewed with interest the rise and progress of Pontiac and its surroundings. 

With spirit he entered into the reforms and enterprises of town and county, 
having foresight to discern when his work was done, cheerfully transferring it 
to younger men to carry forward.

Being of ardent temperament and positive in his nature, he entered with zeal 
into the Masonic excitement, labored fervently in the anti-slavery cause, and 
with persistent perseverance in the temperance work of the age.

The old citizens of Oakland well remember his temperance speeches and anti-
slavery addresses.  Being a strict observer of physiological laws, he lived to 
a good old age, retaining his faculties until the last.

Mr. M. departed this life at the residence of Joel Benedict, his son-in-law, 
where he spent the later years of his existence, Jan. 18th, 1879, aged 90 years 
1 month and 4 days.

His end was peace; having many years trusted in the Blood of Jesus.  His 
remains were deposited beside those of his companion, in Berlin, who deceased 
Aug., 1868.

His funeral obsequies occurred at the residence of Mr. Benedict, Jan. 20th, 
sermon by Rev. J. Donnelly of Ionia.
