Joseph Morse, well known and highly esteemed Portland township resident, passes away at his home at two o’clock this morning following an illness of several months from Bright’s disease. Funeral services will be held under the auspices of the Portland Masonic Lodge, from the residence to the Congregational church at two o’clock, Saturday afternoon in charge of Rev. Moore and Rev. Stewart. Interment will be made in Portland cemetery. Although Mr. Morse had been ill for some time and his death was expected, it nevertheless came as a great shock to his many Portland friends and brother Masons, who will sadly miss him from their ranks. He was one of the lodge’s most active members as well as one of the oldest, having received his first degree in Portland Lodge in 1884 and made a life member December 5, 1916. Mr. Morse was born in Washtenaw county in 1852 coming to Portland with his parents when a small boy, spending the remainder of his lifetime in this vicinity. He was one of the county’s prominent and successful farmers, following that vocation until illness forced him to retire from active work. On April 13, 1882, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary L. Buck who, with four sons, survive. They are Nelson of Detroit; Gilbert of Los Angeles, Cal; and Stanley and Robert of Portland. Two brothers, one half-brother and a sister also survive; Charles and Henry Morse of Portland; Len Morse, of Lyon; and Mrs. Agnes Hatinger, of Edmore.
