Portland Observer, 1 Oct 1902

Dan Morse, son of Hon. Allen B. Morse of Ionia, died at Las Cruces, New Mexico, 
last Thursday morning, of lung trouble.  He as 20 years of age and fine young 
man.  When Melvin Bemis (son of Prof. C.L. Bemis, formerly of Portland) was 
drowned at Long Lake a year ago this summer young Morse attempted to rescue him 
from the water, and that exposure is thought to have been the cause of the 
trouble which resulted in his death.  Before the young man died he selected the 
pall-bearers from among his companions in Ionia.
