Morse At Washington - Was Prominent Ionia County Man and Active Anti-Saloon Worker Portland friends received a telegram Sunday from Washington, D.C. announcing the death of Hon. Grant M. Morse, which occurred very suddenly that morning. Mr. Morse was born north of Portland, Nov. 18, 1854 on a farm which his father Darius Morse, purchased in 1853 and sold a few years later purchasing a merchandise store in Collins in 1855 where Grant Morse spent his school days. He attended the agricultural college at Lansing and returned to take care of his father’s business at Collins. Later, he moved to Portland, where he entered a general grocery business, which he retained until 1888, when he sold out and engaged in selling life insurance. He was elected Justice of the peace in 1890, which office he served until about 1900. Then he was appointed state game warden at Lansing, and after serving one term he filled the office of deputy game warden until he went to Washington about four years ago. At the time of his death at Washington he was assistant librarian of the senate. He was Postmaster at Portland for eight years and held numerous political offices in the township as well as the city. He was also active as an anti-saloon worker. The body reached Portland on Tuesday and the funeral services are being held this afternoon. Burial will be in Portland cemetery.
