C.H. Morse Called Passed Away at His Home Here Saturday Morning, Aged 76 Years Well Known All Over The State Col. C.H. Morse has passed away. While this announcement was not unexpected, yet when it was made Saturday morning it proved a great shock to his wide circle of friends. He was stricken with apoplexy the night of March 12 and never regained consciousness. The deceased will be greatly missed in the community where he has lived so many years, and in the life of which he has taken such an active part for so long a time. He left a deep impression on the community. The value of such a life as his cannot be estimated. No matter what place he was called on to fill he always gave it the best there was in him and this meant much. To this fact is owing largely his eminent success in whatever he undertook. He was intensely loyal in everything loyal to his family, home, friends, town and to his country. Being of a naturally happy temperament he always radiated sunshine, and was the life of any company he was in. While he will be sadly missed by all, yet his loss will be felt the most keenly by his family in the home where his place never can be filled. Charles H. Morse was born in Orangeville, Wyoming county, New York, January 27, 1838, and passed away at his home in Carson City, Mich., March 21, 1914, at the age of 76 years. In 1855 he came with his parents to Ionia county, Mich. He early responded to his country’s call by enlisting September 14, 1861, in Co. D., 3rd Michigan Cavalry, and served throughout the civil war, rendering such service as to attain the rank of Lieut.-Colonel. He was mustered out August 23, 1867, after nearly six years’ continuous service. Shortly after returning home following his discharge Mr. Morse located in New Haven township, Gratiot county, where he purchased a large farm on which he resided until 1894, when he removed his family to Lansing at the time of his filling the position of State Labor Commissioner under Gov. John T. Rich. While living in Gratiot county Col. Morse held many offices of trust, and also served two terms as Representative in the state legislature and one term as State Senator. In 1897 after having served four years as Labor Commissioner, he removed to Carson City, where he has since resided. For many years he has held the office of state statistical agent for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. February 14, 1864, Mr. Morse was united in marriage to Miss Julia Sessions of North Plains, Ionia county. After living together 50 years they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary last month which was a very joyous occasion. Besides his faithful life he leaves two sons, John C., of New Haven, and Mark C. of Albion, and one daughter, Mrs. Kate Biddle, Casey, Ill., eight grandchildren, one brother, Myron Morse, of Ionia, who, with many of the relatives and a host of friends mourn the loss of a loving husband and father and a devoted friend. The funeral services were held at the home Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 o’clock, Rev. H.V. Wade, pastor of the M.E. church, officiating. There was a large attendance, also the G.A.R. Post attended in a body. Appropriate songs were rendered by Ira Cummings, Dr. J.B. Taylor, Mrs. Jas. Richardson and Miss Clara Gunther with Gray Fowler as accompanist.
