Morse, with his wife and several others, were preparing to entertain directors of the Lake Odessa Lions club at a meeting that evening. Morse was an active member of the Lake Odessa Lions club and had been zone chairman of Lions International and committee chairman of Leader Dog for the blind for State of Michigan. He was deputy district governor, past president of the local club and was secretary-treasurer for many years. Only last week Morse had spent the day helping firemen and others of the Lake Odessa area direct fire fighters at the fire which destroyed the Machine Products company there. According to those at the Grand River cottage Morse was sitting in a chair talking with friends and his wife when he suddenly became ill and died before help could be summoned. In May President Morse and his wife attended the mayor’s exchange dinner in Ionia. He had spent the day in Carson City as part of the exchange program. Dr. Morse had been a lifelong resident of Lake Odessa. He was born in Danby township November 21, 1905, the son of Fredrick and Nellie High Morse. He was graduated from Lake Odessa high school in 1923 and received his dental degree in 1929 at University of Michigan where he was affiliated with Sigma Delta Delta fraternity. Following his graduation he entered practice in Lake Odessa. He was a member of Central Methodist church of Lake Odessa and Ionia Country club. Last spring he was elected chairman of region five of Michigan Municipal league. Surviving are his wife, Marie L.; his mother, Mrs. Nellie Morse of Lake Odessa; a sister, Mrs. Frances LaLonde of Detroit, and two nephews and one niece. Funeral service will be conducted at Pickens funeral chapel Friday at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. Luther Brokaw will officiate and interment will be at Lakeside cemetery. A memorial fund for Leader Dog for the Blind has been established. --- Hastings paper, August 1, 1963 Dr. Morse of Lake Odessa Dies Suddenly Tuesday Dr. George L. Morse, 57, Lake Odessa dentist and president of the village of Lake Odessa, died suddenly at his summer home in Sebewa township, east of Lake Odessa, late Tuesday afternoon. He had suffered with a heart ailment for many years. Death occurred while Dr. Morse and his wife were entertaining the officers of the Lake Odessa Lions club, and their wives, at a picnic. He was taken ill and died before help could be obtained. Dr. Morse, who was graduated from Lake Odessa High school in 1923, had been a prominent resident of this area. Dr. Morse was serving his third term as president of the village of Lake Odessa. He had also served as a councilman. He was a past president of the Lake Odessa Lions club, had served as Zone Chairman of Lions International, and as a deputy and district governor of Lions and was committee chairman of the Leader Dog for the Blind for Michigan. He had served as secretary-treasurer of the Lake-O Lions for many years. Last Spring he was elected chairman of Region 5 of the Michigan Municipal league. He was born in Danby township of Ionia county on Nov. 21, 1905, the son of Frederick and Nellie (High) Morse. He was graduated from the University of Michigan’s School of Dentistry in 1929, and had practiced continually in Lake Odessa. He was a member of the Central Methodist Church. Funeral services are to be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Pickens chapel. The Rev. Luther Brokaw is to officiate and burial will be in Lakeside cemetery.
