While Tommie was sick the dog stayed around the house and seemed to sense that something was wrong with his master. After the young man’s death there was no outward sign that the dog knew a tragedy had entered the home but why he should have chosen this particular time to have gone to the Keyes neighborhood, north of Collins, to visit his old friend, Nine Pinckney, can only be accounted for on the theory that the dog was lonesome. It was the day before the funeral, and Mr. Pinckney fed his dumb friend and petted him for sympathy, because of what had happened. They buried Tommie Friday afternoon, but there was another ceremony, close to the Keyes railroad crossing earlier the same morning. Mr. Pinckney, on his way down the road, paused to look at mangled mass which he recognized as having once been a dog. Colonel had been hit by an engine in the early morning hours. He was buried closed to where he met his death. And so it happened that Tommie Morse and his dog Colonel, pals for 12 years, went to their long rest on the same day.
